I used to go to Mangal Kebab on Queens Blvd at 47th street pretty frequently when I lived on 45th street, but I haven’t been there since they expanded and started offering sit-down service last year. We actually got take-out tonight, so I can’t comment on the waiter service, but the food itself is certainly the same.
Almost the entire menu is on display in picture form on the outside window. The kitchen/take out ordering section is on the left, and the expanded sit-down restaurant can be seen on the right. Mangal Kebab is pretty much the only choice for purely Turkish take-out in Sunnyside (the much fancier Turkish Grill is a sit-down place).
For $13 it’s a little on the expensive side for take-out (although smaller, cheaper portions are also available), but it is good and quite large. Accompanying the meat is rice, onions, salad, and tomatoes, as well as bread. I just wish it was a bit spicier, perhaps with one of those spicy green peppers, which the traditional dish comes with.
Here is one piece of the Kusabasili Pide ($10) – the pides are basically bread-based dishes, kind of like pizza (which Mangal actually does surprisingly serve!), but cut in different ways. This particular one is with lamb, and was quite good.
This picture is just to illustrate the total amount of pide you get with your take-out order. Interestingly enough they also include pockets of hot sauce – Chinese hot sauce!
For dessert, Mangal Kebab has baklava and various puddings, including this tasty rice pudding ($3.50), which is plenty for two people.
